Les Bleus are assured of atleast a playoff spot and can seal automatic qualification on the final match day after they beat Bulgaria away from home in the penultimate round. Blaise Matuidi’s early strike was enough for Dider Deschamps’ side to see off the Bulgarians, who, as old timers will remember, caused a major upset by ensuring France missed out on the 1994 World Cup. The result also eliminated Bulgaria’s slim chances of qualifying for WC 2018.
France’s final clash is against Belarus at home. A win there will see them top the group. Second place will be decided between Netherlands and Sweden, but it is likely to be Scandinavians who qualify, with Netherlands somehow needing seven goals to leapfrog the Swedes.
