Paris Saint-Germain were beaten 3-1 at the Bernabeu by Real Madrid and the visitors’ Spanish coach, Unai Emery, came copped a fair bit of criticism for his tactics. Emery opted to start with rising star Giovani Lo Celso in midfield against Los Blancos, and the Argentine had one of his poorest games in a Paris jersey. Emery also chose to bench captain Thiago Silva and go with young Kimpembe to partner Marquinhos in the heart of defence.
Emery’s tactics of adding an extra defender towards the end in Thomas Meunier backfired as Zidane sent on attacking substitutes and turned the game on its head in the last ten minutes, with two crucial goals giving Real the advantage in this two legged clash Continue reading
Here are the opponents for French sides Lyon, Nice and Marseille from today’s Europa League Round of 32 draw.
There were three French teams in the group stages of the Europa League and all three qualified for the Round of 32 as runners up- Lyon behind Atalanta, Nice behind Lazio and Marseille behind Red Bull Salzburg.
There could have been a fourth Ligue 1 representative in the Round of 32 had Monaco atleast managed to finish third in their Champions League group, but the principality outfit finished last and bowed out of Europe altogether. Continue reading
Paris Saint-Germain’s “reward” for topping their Champions League group is a clash against mighty Real Madrid in the Round of 16. The Parisians faced Barcelona in the Round of 16 last season- an epic two legged clash which saw the Catalans overturn a 4-0 lead from the first leg, and will now square off against the defending champions this season. French youngster Corentin Tolisso scored twice as Bayern Munich handed Paris Saint-Germain their first defeat in the Champions League this year with a 3-1 triumph at the Allianz Arena.
PSG had won all five of their CL group fixtures and had conceded only once going into this fixture, but went down 3-1 to suffer their second straight loss in all competitions, having been upset by Strasbourg over the weekend.
PSG had beaten Bayern 3-0 earlier in this competition, a result that saw the Bavarians sack Carlo Ancelotti. His replacement Jupp Heynckes has masterminded a revival of sorts in recent weeks, with Bayern re-establishing their Bundesliga dominance.
However the 3-1 was not enough for Bayern to leapfrog the Parisians, who finished as Group winners. Bayern finished second in their group, which means they could face tougher opponents in the Round of 16 Continue reading
Paris Saint-Germain have booked their spot in the Round of 16 of the Champions League, with a 5-0 win at home over Anderlecht sealing qualification for Unai Emery’s side after Match Day 4.
Paris’ win, along with Bayern’s triumph away at Celtic, means that the duo cannot be caught by either the Hoops or RSCA.
Paris have won all four of their CL games so far- they’ve scored more goals than any other side in the group stages and are also the only team not to have conceded a goal.
The winner of Group A will in all probably be decided in early December, when the Parisians host Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern on Match Day 6. The Bavarians were coached by Carlo Ancelotti when they lost 3-0 at the Allianz Arena in September, but have turned a corner since Heynckes came on board, and are now looking more like their former unbeatable selves.
