The Trophee des Champions (French Super Cup) heads to Austria this year with Paris Saint-Germain looking to claim a fourth straight title. The capital outfit have won the last three editions (held in Gabon, China and Canada respectively), scoring two goals on every occasion. 2016 will also be the first time the Super Cup will be held in a European country other France.
PSG won the 2015/16 Ligue 1 title by a resounding 31 points, leading the way almost from the off, eventually totalling 96 points from a possible 114. Bob Bradley’s Le Havre were denied promotion as Metz squeaked through on goals scored after a dramatic final round of fixtures in Ligue 2.
Metz suffered a 1-0 loss to Lens, while Le Havre hammered Bourg en Brasse 5-0. The two results meant that both Metz and Bob Bradley’s side were tied on points and goal difference, but the former’s 54 goals scored (in comparison to Le Havre’s 52) saw them finish ahead of their rivals and join champions Nancy and Dijon in the top flight. AS Saint-Etienne will not be playing Europa League football next season after they suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Lille OSC on the final day of the season. Going into the game, ASSE were a point ahead of Lille and only needed to avoid defeat to stay ahead of Les Dogues.
Instead, Eder’s first half penalty four minutes before half time gave the northern outfit all three points in front of a 39,550 strong crowd at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, and also European football at the expense of Les Verts.
