Caen vs Rennes over the weekend was a special game in the French top flight, with the fixture at Stade Michel d’Ornano being refereed by Switzerland’s Sandro Scharer and his assistants Bekim Zogaj and Stephane de Almeida. Former West Ham player Diafra Sakho netted twice for Rennes, but Caen took a point thanks to Damian da Silva’s late equaliser.
However results elsewhere saw Caen drop from 11th to 12th, while Rennes rose a spot up to 7th. Caen also missed two penalties- one from Rony Rodelin (25) and the second from Stef Peeters (81)
Caen 2 (Crivelli 6, Da Silva 84) drew with Stade Rennais (Sakho 9, 21)
The game was part of a referee exchange between France and Switzerland. The Swiss Super League game involving French referees was between Basel and St.Gallen and saw the former lose 2-0 thanks to Cedric Itten’s double for the visitors. Second loss for Basel following their midweek CL hammering against Man City, and curiously enough, Basel also missed a penalty at the same time that Caen missed one of theirs, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel failing to score from twelve yards out.
The fourth official in both games was a home one- Lissorgue for the Caen-Rennes one and Jaccottet for FCB-STG.
